Resilience is a learnable skill. It is the ability to bounce back after trauma and stay strong under adverse circumstances. However, 90% of all adolescents worldwide live in low-income countries and most will never read a book on resilience. It was out of this international dilemma regarding adolescent depression that GROW (Global Resilience Oral Workshops) was created.
KIN worked with GROW to produce a short documentary and a reportage style photo series that would tell the story of their program, currently active in Lusaka, Zambia. In the pre-production phase, we worked closely with the client to outline the project objectives and develop a storyboard for the series.
Our team spent two weeks in Zambia visiting schools that are teaching the GROW program, filming interviews and b-roll for the documentary as well as shooting still photography. The result was a 10 minute film featuring the stories of the key leadership at GROW as well as the Zambia program staff and students. KIN’s film and photography has been used in grant applications to further promote their work and increase funding to expand the program worldwide. With the support of the film and images, GROW was recently awarded $1 million by the John Templeton foundation to fund and expand their programs for the next two years.
